I AM NOT I is a new full-length play set in modern, recession-stricken America. 15-year-old Jane Jiménez, the daughter of a Jewish mother and Mexican father, is about to have her quinceañera. However, as the celebration of her “transition into womanhood” approaches, Jane isn’t as much excited as she is horrified—because she doesn’t feel like a woman…In fact, she knows she’s not female at all.
Jane isn’t the only one trying to break free of the waltz she’s been taught in order to create a dance of her own. Her mother, Lisa, seems trapped in the past but is unable to find anyone else to live in it with her. Her father, Reynaldo, is about to break under the weight of the secrets he’s been hiding. Her girlfriend, Dawn, would run away from the trailer park in a heartbeat—if she didn’t have to play parent to her alcoholic mother. All four characters find themselves stepping off-beat, attempting to figure out the proper choreography. Do we truly have control over who we are? Are we fated to a prescribed story? Or do we have a choice in who we become?
I AM NOT I received its first reading at Ithaca College in May 2011 and was directed by the playwright. The reading featured Deanalís Resto as Jane, Alexandra Braverman as Lisa, Jason Barrera as Rey, and Morgan Lavenstein as Dawn; Jessica Askew read stage directions and served as the production's dramaturge.
A second reading of the (largely revised) script took place at New York City's Shetler Studios on June 16-18, 2013. This reading was directed by Chrysta Naron and featured the talents of Emma Ramos (Jane), Joan Shavit (Lisa), Eliud Kauffman (Rey), Morgan Lavenstein (Dawn), and Luke Wise (stage directions.) Victor Pachas performed live music, and the producing team consisted largely of Roundabout Theatre Company apprentices and employees, as well as Ithaca College alum.
